My friend put my car into reverse while driving 50mph, it still drives fine, could it still be damaged?

My car is 1996 Grand Am, Automatic 4-Speed. When it happen, the car did engage the gear, but it didnt lock up, it just starting jolting and felt like it was dying, i immediately stopped the car and shut it off, the car rested 20 minutes, then i drove off, and it worked fine, it turned the tranny fluid black, so i got it flushed and changed and they also added a quart of lucas transmission fix, i just want to know if even though it drives fine now, could problems develop later because of this. I like the car, but should i get rid of the car before something happens, help me please! Thank You!My friend put my car into reverse while driving 50mph, it still drives fine, could it still be damaged?
That transmission has an over speed lock out that saved it, the flushing and change was good. Drive it and feel and listen to check everything out, yeah, front end too. remember throw next time that happens you WILL need a New Transmission. My friend put my car into reverse while driving 50mph, it still drives fine, could it still be damaged?

The LUCAS additive will take care of it. Seriously I did that when I was a teen, at 70 MPH flipped it into reverse. Damn near lost control, but tapped it back into drive. Never hurt a thing, drove it for 2 years afterward. My friend put my car into reverse while driving 50mph, it still drives fine, could it still be damaged?
I own a shop, and think this; I must say you are very lucky it would drive off. It may still go for now, but if there is any lining left on the band, I would be amazed. This isn't the first time one has been put into reverse at that speed, but probably the first one to survive it. The black you saw in the fluid is facings off the reverse band, and it will (more than likely) start to slip. Changing the fluid is not that good because, you can't get all that stuff out of one without a disassemble of the whole unit, and the torque converter. You had the fluid flushed, but did they also change the filter? Who can say, it may work fine without a hitch for ten years longer? As for the Lucas stuff, it won't help any, other than make it worse if anything. It will help sticking valves in one, but it is so slick that it allows slippage of the clutches %26amp; band in one. The best thing to do (with any automatic transmission) is to stay away from additives, unless it has developed sticking valves as in a shift problem, but I do recommend some other brand of additive I've used for years that replaces the whale oil they used to use in fluid.

To answer your question, yes it is damaged, and its pretty severe. The black fluid says it all. When you are sitting still, put the transmission in reverse (after driving for 15-20 mins.) and see if it goes right into gear, hesitates, or doesn't want to back up. You should feel it clunk into gear (normal) so there is no whine as it goes slowly (damaged) into the reverse gear. If you begin to see any different symptoms with it in any other gear, then its the black stuff doing a number on the valves. The damage is done. How bad, who knows??

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!My friend put my car into reverse while driving 50mph, it still drives fine, could it still be damaged?
Sidecar0 is correct. There is a fail-safe for auto tranny. You can physically put it in reverse but the solenoids will not engage. It actually didnt mechanically go into reverse. If it had ,the wheels would have locked up or the tranny would be broken. There was actually an episode on Myth-busters that tested this myth. It didnt break the tranny or lock up the wheels. I think you are pretty safe to keep on motoring.
