On Friday my car key snapped. Annoying in it's self however I also have the problem that the only spare key i have only opens and locks the car but won't turn in the ignition. Has anyone got any ideas? Do I need to change the whole barrel?

If your key is chipped then place the broken key as close to the point where it would normally be to start the car.
then with the spare key turn the ignition as normal.
You should be able to get the car to start but may take some tinkering around.

depends on the make of the car but some have inbuilt engine demobiliser, chip in the key. the spare will only work to open the door. is a security feature of most modern (less than 9 year old) cars. sorry but you'll need original key to be cut and coded...Snapped my car key and spare wont start the car?
Go To The dealership,, GM - Ford - Etc. Go to the parts dept. take the serial of the car with you and also the old key parts ..if theres a chip in it they need to take a reading of that chip.. Theres records,,, they can call for a code, and make you a set of factory Keys...I have done this many times.. they work much better than the aftermarkets too ,, they punch them out instead of grinding them same as the worn ones..I hope this helps you.... It depends on what make the car is and how old it is. Some cars use keys that are coded into them, but if the key isn't used for a while it could become de-coded. If, it not a %26quot;Smart Key%26quot; the one that snapped if you have all of it, try going to a locksmith or place that make keys. They may be able to try and make another. May not be able to guarantee it, but, it worth a try.Snapped my car key and spare wont start the car?
If you still have the Pieces take them along to you local Key Cutter and see if he can achieve a copy from what's left.
I agree it may become overly expensive otherwise.

I'm sorry to hear that. It could be that there is still a little piece of the old key inside or the little teeth that make up the lock have been damaged. You can have the barrel taken out and hev it checked by a locksmith. They do that type of thing. I don't think it it should have to be completely replace. Just don't try to force the switch because you could really damage it and then it'll be useless.Snapped my car key and spare wont start the car?
