How do you know if it's your battery or your car that's messed up?

Turned key, engine turned over for about 1/2 second and stopped. Turned key again--nothing. Even door locks %26amp; windows didn't work. Got a colleague out of office with jumper cables, just about to hook up, turned key again.....in business!

Am thinking battery has short, but I will feel really silly if I change out and car doesn't start again....somebody who knows about this stuff please tell me wassup! thanks...How do you know if it%26039;s your battery or your car that%26039;s messed up?
The electronics class I just took leads me to also believe you have a bad/corroded/ or loose connection somewhere along your starting circuit. A shorted battery would certainly not cause this problem. Easiest thing to do here is clean the battery terminals and both cables,(where they make contact) then try starting it. If you still have the same old problem, chances are the starter has a bad connection. If you have access to a multimeter, this issue can solved in minutes. Good news is, if a bad connection is the problem, its usually free to fix, some cleaning/tightening usually does the trick. FYI: the second most likely cause an open circuit in your starter's armature. This is characterized by an occasional no cranking condition, which suddenly goes away after turning the key enough times. This condition requires buying a new starter unless you feel like rebuilding it. Lot's of information I know, but hopefully it makes enough sense to help u outHow do you know if it%26039;s your battery or your car that%26039;s messed up?
go up to your local orilies or pep boys or auto zone and they can test it for you but it sounds like you have a bad battery to me but always test it first. How do you know if it%26039;s your battery or your car that%26039;s messed up?
Sounds more like a connection problem. Check all battery cable connections...both at the battery and where they hook up to the engine and starter. Look for corrosion, dirt, oil, and loose bolts. How do you know if it%26039;s your battery or your car that%26039;s messed up?
Make sure your battery cables are secure, sounds like there a bad or loose connection on you battery cables. if that's not it then the battery is shot.
